The Blacksmith Shop
The blacksmith shop was originally located behind the Shaw house 30 Bellport Lane. Joseph Merritt Shaw (1826-1900) made the ironwork on the ships being built in Bellport and the unique wrought iron hardware for the “Bellport Gate” that can still be seen on picket fences throughout Bellport and Brookhaven. His sons, Charles K. Shaw (1868-1941) and Joseph Shaw, joined their father in the business that had been carried on continuously since its establishment in 1846. The Shaws were wheelwrights, farriers, and ironmasters. The Blacksmith Shop and tools were donated to the historical society and moved to the campus in 1957.
